Description: 'Recitals of music are given in the Central Court twice a week during the special exhibitions, and prove a great attraction. The upper floor, in which the special exhibitions are held, consists of five extensive rooms, and a couple of balconies overlooking the Central Court. The galleries are all lighted from the roof, and at night by electricity. Since the opening there have been four Artists' Exhibitions, two exhibitions of works on loan, one "Arts and Crafts" Exhibition, an International Photographic Exhibition, and two exhibitions of works on loan [sic]. These were of a high standard of excellence, and were visited by over 299,000 people' (Year's Art, 1893, p. 169).
