Competition for a Memorial in Rye Churchyard (Royal Society of British Sculptors), 1931
Start Date: March 1931
Type: Competition
Description: Memorial to the memory of 17 lifeboat men 'who lost their lives in the disaster of 1928'. A design sent by James Wedgwood was accepted 'subject to satisfactory modifications being made'.
C. L. Hartwell was nominated to represent the RBS as one of three assessors alongside the Ex-Mayor of Rye and a representative of the Public Trustee. The Council of the Royal Society of British Sculptors advised that the initial sum of £350 that was allocated for the commission, would be insufficient for 'anything but a very simple work' ('Annual Report, 1930', 1931, Royal Society of British Sculptors).
