Policy: From 1932 an annual gift of £500 was awarded by the Trustees of the first Viscount Leverhulme for the award of scholarships 'to those students who, on completing their studies in the Royal Academy Schools, are considered [...] to be most deserving of assistance in commencing their work as professional artists' (Hutchison, 1968, p. 174).
Scholarships were open to men and women.

In 1939 Rickard won the Edward Scott Travelling Studentship of £200, for a composition in sculpture. It is recorded in 1948, however, that as Rickard was unable to travel abroad, he was awarded a Leverhulme Scholarship of £200 in 1948, 'to assist him in commencing work as a professional sculptor' (see 'Annual Report, 1948', 1949, pp. 14, 16).
