Art Exhibition at Alton Towers, 1865
Start Date: July 1865
End Date: September 1865
Type: Exhibition
Description: The executive committee asked for donations of paintings and drawings, engravings 'particularly those illustrating Topography of the Midland Counties', photographs, 'Sculpture, Terra Cotta, and Mosaics', Armour, 'Decorative Metal Work' 'Pottery, especially old Wedgwood Ware', 'Modern examples of the Art Manufactures of the Midland Counties': the last of these categories suggests that contemporary ceramic/pottery/sculpture was included in this exhibition ('Art Exhibition at Alton Tower', June 1965).
Policy: The executive committee encouraged donation of works that were representative of the Midland Counties. All of the works displayed appear to have been donated to the exhibition. The committee co-operated with the South Kensington Museum who sent works from their own collection. The exhibition was staged to raise funds for the completion of the Wedgwood Institute building ('Art Exhibition at Alton Tower', June 1965).
