Description: In 1922 the classes of 'Sculpture, Modelling and Letter Cutting' were described as follows: 'Day and evening classes are held in the Modelling and and Stone carving from Life, Modelling for lead-work and stucco, Designing in the round and relief, etc' [summary].
From 1924 the classes included 'Sculpture, Stone Carving, Modelling, Letter Cutting, Hardwood and Ivory Carving.' The classes are described as providing instruction in 'the study of natural forms and ornament: the figure (male, female, and bust), letter cutting, stone, hard-wood and ivory carving, clay and wax modelling, and their respective applications in design'[summary].
'Modelling and Pattern Making for the Metal Trades,Modelling for Fibrous Plaster Decoration, Plaster Casting and Gelatine Moulding', were added to the list of classes in 1934. [summary].
From 1930 the classes were listed variously as 'Sculpture' or 'Sculpture and Modelling', but they included the same sylabus as was described in 1924.
From 1921 to 1932 separate programmes were produced to advertise 'Classes for Modellers Carvers Letter Cutters Plaster Workers and Others' [summary - see related 'event' entry].
Policy: In order to attend these classes 'students must continue their practice of drawing, and attend one of the courses of lectures on design.'
From 1888 these classes were entitled 'Advance Modelling'. From 1903 these classes were entitled 'Modelling and Modelled Design', and included instruction in casting.
