International Exhibition, Dublin, 1907
End Date: 1907
Type: International exhibition
Description: 'The Fine Art Section of the Irish International Exhibition is located in a spacious and noble suite of galleries in the building known as the "Palace of Fine Arts"' (Year's Art, 1908, p. 280).
'Four of these galleries are devoted to a display of British and Continental Art, the formation of which has occupied a Committee in London for a long time past [...] Of the art of the British sculptor, many highly interesting and distinguished works will be found in the various mediums of marble, bronze, plaster and terra-cotta, by those who have already attained a notable position in the profession, or whose ability may lead them, in the near future, to occupy such a position' (Year's Art, 1908, p. 280).
On 21 July 1906, Frampton reported to the Royal Society of British Sculptors that he had joined the art committee of the Dublin exhibition. He showed a plan, detailing the space 'he had procured for sculpture, the main gallery being eighty feet square'. He went through his proposals for the English art section, for which works would be invited, and asked that all present would co-operate (21 July 1906, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, vol. 1).
'Mr. Frampton reported the unqualified success of the Dublin Exhibition. It was considered to be one of the finest collections ever got together' (13 May 1907, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, vol. 1).
Policy: The introduction to the catalogue states that the object the Organising Committee had in view was to 'afford the people of Ireland the opportunity to see and study some of the greatest and most attractive examples of modern art'.
'In the first place, a very careful selection of the best examples in all branches by British artists was gathered together, the effort being made to show at least one specimen of the best work, not only of those who have already taken a high position in art, but of those whose work gives unmistakable promise. In this way the Committee sought to encourage the rising talent of the day by placing it side by side with the works of those whose experience and practice have been of long standing (Year's Art, 1908, p. 281).
Display Arrangement: British sculpture was on display in Gallery II, 'with some paintings'. Irish sculpture was shown separately among 'Pictures, Drawings, Engravings and Sculpture by Irish Artists', in Gallery V. A ground plan was featured in the original catalogue.
