Description: 49th annual exhibition. A larger than usual number of exhibits: with 607 works displayed. A high representation amongst paintings and featured only eleven exhibits related to sculpture and numismatics.

In 1878 the Sunday opening was an experiment only. Sunday admissions did not occur again until 1884.
Display Arrangement: Due to the size of the exhibition, approximately half the exhibits were displayed between the Large Room and the Ante Room (333 works), and the remaining works (274) were all displayed together in the Sculpture Room.
