Franco-British Exhibition of Science, Art and Industries (London), 1908
End Date: 1908 (Presumed)
Type: Exhibition
Description: Art section highly successful; visited by 3.5 million people.
Royal Society of British Sculptors made hanging suggestions and requested involvement (6 July 1907, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
Brock reported that he had managed to have concessions approved; the Society secretary was asked to establish particulars of the French arrangements for the exhibition (2 December 1907, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
The Society recommended that the art committee of the exhibition find works by Armstead, Bates, Boehm, Foley, Onslow Ford, Lord Leighton, Alfred Stevens and Watts to show in section alongside works by living artists.
Members were asked to suggest works of their own which they would like to recommend for inclusion, as was Gilbert (by letter) and non-members D. Brown, H. Hampton, A. Jones, L. White and Ward. Also female non-members Buckle, Giles, Moore, Simpson, Windser and Wallace, and HRH Princess Louise (13 January 1908, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
Exhibition had wished to borrow works from the Crystal Palace but high insurance costs had prevented this (7 June 1909, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
Edward Poynter, Chairman of the Exhibition, wrote to thank the society for its help in making the art section a success (6 July 1908, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
Brock reported on the event to the Royal Society of British Sculptors (2 November 1908, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no. 1).
