Born in Shadwell, London. She was the daughter of Harry A. Rose (born c.1851 in London), a barge builder. In 1916 she married Percy Grout Smith (born c.1888 in Camberwell) who had been a stockbroker's clerk in 1911 and was serving in the army during the war. Gwendolen exhibited with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1916 and twice at the Royal Academy, once in 1914 and a second time under her married name in 1924.
